Objective
BE95-2128
Increased environmental awareness puts stricter requirements on the car manufacturers to develop clean cars and to maintain their cleanliness during operation. A first step has been done by the Californian OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) II legislation.
These requirements accompany cars from development to the service bay and diagnostics gets a new dimension of significance for the service department. It is necessary
. to find occuring faults in a timely and cost effective manner to keep the customer satisfied, . to standardise the diagnostic environment in order to be competitive in a world market
. to use the synergy of car manufacturers, suppliers, and workshops in order to achieve all these objectives.
Brite EuRam III recognised the importance of diagnostics by giving it a new keyword (B36).
Developing improved on-board diagnosis capabilities relies on understanding and incorporating the evolving techniques and computer-based technology utilized by service bay technicians. In this domain significant work has been done in developing and automating the processes of tracking symptoms to specific faults through scheduling and application of strategic tests within the constraint of minimal-cost-fault-finding.
As a next step and in compliance with future requirements there is a need to develop an integrated approach to design, development and execution of off-board and on-board vehicle diagnostics. The field of off-board vehicle diagnosis is still maturing but the field of on-board vehicle diagnosis is virtually nonexistent. Due to recent results of basic research it is now capable of supporting and adopting advanced techniques of off-board diagnosis.
This integration will assure that cars will spend less time in shops and bring car users closer to the goal of total mobility. Prevention of break-down and on time maintenance will increase customers satisfaction, safety of driving and regularity of traffic flow.
The consortium comprises three of Europe's major car manufacturers (Daimler-Benz, Fiat, Volvo), two of the main suppliers (Bosch, Magneti Marelli), a large workshop equipment company (GenRad). To implement the latest progress in model based diagnosis the consortium relies on the knowledge coming from the top European scientists in the field, from three universities. Dassault Electronique will be able to add to the experience gained with application of diagnosis in the aerospace industry.
Brite/EuRam III Areas covered by the proposal are 3B.3.3.S 3B.6 and 3B.5.
