Depolymerisation, Polymerisation and Applications of Biosustainable Raw Materials for Industrial Polymeric End Uses

Exploitable results

Good progress has been made on all aspects of CARBOPOL during the three years of the project and the industrial partners are now in the process of developing new products, derived from the novel biosustainable resources that are the core of this project, for commercialization The project has produced a range of well characterized, novel carbohydrate building blocks that have been successfully incorporated into a variety of industrial polymeric systems spanning a wide range of industrial interests. Both technical and economic opportunities have been identified in industrial segments ranging from decorative coatings and adhesives, through cobuilders, superabsorbants and paper coatings and chemicals, to extruded thermoplastic materials. We have been able to take advantage of the range of synthetic, analytical and polymerization skills that reside within the skill base of the project partners to deliver these opportunities. We have taken starch, cellulose and hemicellulose raw materials forward within CARBOPOL, as defined in the original Work Programme, and have produced modified raw materials in all of these carbohydrate segments. Novel polymers have been produced from these (modified) raw materials in each of the segments and the industrial partners have selected their preferred systems from the wide range of possibilities that the project has produced.
