The Monitoring of Reciprocating Plant & Machinery For Improved Effi ciency & Reduced Breakbown

Objective

The main objective of the project is to develop an
automatic monitoring system for reciprocating machines
used in shipping, power generation and petroleum
refining. This system will offer the industrial users the
ability to carry out planned maintenance, adaptive
control and remote monitoring in order to improve
efficiency and availability. It will use a multi sensor
approach including acoustic emission, audible sound and
acceleration sensors and will contain a provision to add
other data which is of a more qualitative nature or which
comes from monitoring methods which are not "on line". it
is also important to ensure that the overall cost of the
system does not exceed its likely benefit to the user.
The system will require the versatility to meet the
requirements of manufacturers (ease of incorporation into
product range), end users (ease of use) and regulating
bodies (reliability). The proposal addresses two general
areas of the Workprogramme; Area 1, Production
Technologies and Area 3B, Technologies for Surface
Transport Means. Particular innovations and industrial
developments claimed for the proposed work are: the
combination of on line feature based monitoring with
decision making using qualitative, historical and offline
data. the investigation of acoustic emission
techniques for application to reciprocating machines.
the fusion of acoustic emission, acceleration and sound
radiation signals which will combine the advantages of
each to provide improved diagnostic capabilities.
the use of advanced processing tools (e.g. wavelet
analysis) to extract significant features from signals
acquired on reciprocating machines. the development
of software to combine feature based reasoning with
qualitative reasoning. the development of products
to diagnose faults and identify deterioration in a range
of different applications, each with its own monitoring
needs, varying from remote monitoring to adaptive
control. progress towards fully automated
maintenance scheduling and the "intelligent engine" The
principal requirement is to overcome the lack of
reliability and hence credibility of existing monitoring
systems for reciprocating machines. The system will be
developed for direct application on manufacturers'
products and should therefore be available within one
year of the en of the project. Applications to similar
machines for use by the service providers should be
available within 18 months of the end of the project.
Systems for other types of reciprocating machines will
take longer and will depend upon the degree of similarity
of the industrial problem..
