Formalization and Integration of an Optimized Reverse Engineering S tyling Workflow

Objective

FIORES will cause a revolution in the application area of
aesthetic design. Its results will be
A new optimized workflow using reverse engineering
techniques
New methods and tools for target driven design
("Working with Properties'')

In a very competitive world wide market, styling is a key
factor for the success of a product. In addition, the
process of styling is becoming more complex, since new
materials provide a greater freedom to the designer's
creativity. As a consequence, companies have to be
successful in improving the efficiency and quality of the
styling process. While the use of computer aided
technologies in the area of mechanical product design is
quite well established, the gap in the computer aided
process chain due to the styling phase is a severe
problem: Styling of complex shaped products (like car
hoods, consumer appliances, toys, packaging, etc.) is
still a domain of hand drawing and model building.

The main reason for this is that the system handling does
not fit the way the stylist works. Moreover, there is a
lack of objective formal criteria for evaluating
aesthetic shape properties, which leads to drawbacks in
the design process chain, such as expensive manual work
on scale one models before the final style decision and
bad communication between aesthetic and engineering
design. The necessary translation of the styling model
into the CAD format for further processing leads to
discrepancies, loss of time and forbids concurrent
engineering, making any feedback from downstream process
phases very expensive.

The results of FIORES will provide a real integration of
conceptual aesthetic design steps into the overall
development and production workflow leading to a higher
level of product quality, a shorter design lead time, and
a drastic saving of costs. This will be realized
according to the following strategy:
Application Modelling: The present workflows in five
involved styling companies will be intensively examined
to capture the knowledge and the needs of the partners'
styling experts, show up weak points in the communication
links and make all these mostly hidden structures
explicit.
Formalization & Fundamentals: The aesthetic properties
and problems found will be formalized, so that they can
be used as a theoretical basis for the further project
tasks
Reverse Engineering: Two new approaches of reverse
engineering loop control, in which the user will be
given the control over his desired target properties will
be implemented. CA tools for target driven design will be
the output of this most important task.
User Intefface: To assure an effective handling of the
new tools a suitable user interface will be designed in
close cooperation with the later end users.
Software Prototype: All reverse engineering and user
interface efforts will lead to a software prototype which
will be tested on real parts in an industrial
environment.
Testing & Validation: To avoid any misleading
developments, a technical control task will test all
concepts, methods and tools in the end users'
environments as early as possible.
Final Evaluation: A new optimized workflow, which is
the central achievement of FIORES, will be derived from
the evaluation of all subsequent results and finally put
into practice.

The benefits of the project will be equally distributed
among all involved groups. The end users will gain great
advantages, since the consortium will capture their
specific know how and needs. The European IT vendors will
get the potential to increase their market share and new
research areas will be opened for the research
institutes. Especially the SMEs will gain advantages,
because FIORES with its open system architechture allows
an easy linking of their optimized processes with the
more complex process chains of large companies.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
