Objective
Paper and textile industries are using increasing volumes
of waterborne polymer emulsion, especially
styrene/butadiene copolymers, as binders in coated paper
and carpet manufacturing. As the market is being drawn to
cost effective products with improved environmental
performance, latex producers are facing stringent
requirements to provide polymer emulsion with lower
organic residuals (monomer & by products) so as to
neutralize the taste and odor of the final end products.
The strong competition among latex producers, especially
from non European companies, makes it urgent to decrease
the time to market while lowering the costs, minimizing
the environmental harm and increasing safety and
productivity.
The proposal is aimed at developing a new polymerization
process and on line reaction monitoring that will
efficiently limit the latex contaminants at the source,
rationalize the plant operation of existing facilities,
and shorten new product development time. It will consist
of a new multidetector sensor to monitor polymer reaction
in real time, integrated in an adaptive process control
system with actuators (REMAP).The main innovations are
based on remote sensing through opdc fibers, high signal
accuracy and ease of use (no sampling loops). REMAP
should make it possible to track pre defined reaction
kinetics with unprecedented accuracy on the industrial
level. These reaction pathways will be optimized through
an overall kinetic model developed within the framework
of the project. The main milestones and deliverables of
the project are:
Construction of the sensor prototypes operating at
laboratory and pilot scale
Modelling of the reaction kinetics and design of
process control strategies
Definition of S/B emulsion polymers targeted to market
specifications
Implementation of REMAP system in its plant environment
and industrial start up
Rhône Poulenc Chimie, a French leading latex supplier,
will coordinate the project.
The other partners are:
Bruker Messtechnik GmbH, a German company specialized
in analytical equipment
Scanlatex, a Swedish latex manufacturer, in charge of
industrial implementation of REMAP
LASIR, a French laboratory skilled in analytical
methods
University of Pais vasco, a Spanish laboratory active
in Polymer Reaction Engineering
Ege Taepper, a Danish carpet manufacturer.
