Adaptive composites with embedded shape memory alloy wires

Objective

Objectives and content
Generally speaking, adaptive materials integrate
actuating and sensing technologies into a structural
material. The approach proposed in this basic research
project is the integration of thin shape memory alloy
(SMA) wires as actuating elements in fibre reinforced
polymer composites. The development of these advance
composites with embedded SMA-wires is still in an
embryonic stage. Hence, there are still many fundamental
issues, which require further research before these
adaptive composites can be used in industrial
applications. The general objective of this basic
research project is the materials development and
characterisation of these composites with embedded SMAwires.
Major final achievements of this multi-disciplinary
project will be related to:
manufacturing processes for the production of
composites with prestrained SMA-wires,
detailed quantification and understanding of the action
of the SMA-wires in the composite and the contribution of
the SMA-resin interface,
detailed quantification and understanding of the
functional, thermomechanical and durability properties of
composites with embedded SMA-wires, and the relation with
the basic selection parameters (type of SMA-wires,
surface condition of the SMA-wires, vol% SMA wires,
positioning of SMA-wires, etc.),
software for materials design of composite beams with
embedded SMA-wires,
technical guide-lines for designing, manufacturing and
use of these composites,
preparatory cost-effectiveness estimates of these
composites.
Having solved these aspects of basic research, new
perspectives will be opened with respect to the
development of engineering structures with adaptive
shape, stiffness, damping and other properties. Highly
skilled, complementary partners of different disciplines
are brought together in this project in order to address
successfully the multi-disciplinary nature of composites
with embedded SMA-wires.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
