Automotive components made out of high strength isotropic graphite by a cost-effective technology

Objective

Objectives and Content
The essential aim of the project is the development of a
cost-effective process for production of engine pistons
and water pump seals of high strength isotropic
graphites, made out from Binderless Poly Aromatic
Mesophase (BPAM) obtained by carbonisation of petroleum
refining residues.
It has already been clearly shown that isotropic
graphites exhibit excellent thermal, mechanical, chemical
and tribological properties for production of automotive
components like pistons, valves and water pump seals. It
is also well demonstrated that the best raw materials for
manufacturing isotropic graphites easy to machine are
those based on selfsintering mesophase (BPAM), a
sophisticated technology dominated by Japanese coal
companies until an European consortium joined their
efforts on developing high strength graphites based on
BPAM in a discontinuous process. Besides this, and
following the objectives stablished by the "car of
tomorrow" European Task Force, it has been shown that
carbon pistons can reduce the exhaust of pollutants (HC
up to 30%), gasoline and lube oil consumption (up to 4%
and 40%, respectively). However, two obstacles must be
overcome to meet stringent forthcoming engine builders
requirement and emission legislation: to develop a costeffective process and to assure the homogeneity of the
all product. To achieve these two goals the major
research tasks to be carried out are:
Development of a continuous process of Binderless Poly
Aromatic Mesophase production.
Adaptation and optimisation of a process to produce
graphites in a cost-effective way, near net shape forming
method, based on BPAM as starting material.
Adaptation of the process to doped BPAM and evaluation
of properties.
Design and definition of manufacturing conditions for
BPAM graphite pistons and water pump seals production.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
