Materials system for surface protection and sealing

Objective

Objectives and content: The industrial objectives of the MaSSPS project are to develop a fully integrated corrosion protection system, from the substrate pre-treatment to the final sealing of the structure for application in the aeronautical manufacturing industry. The aim is to reduce emissions of organic material into the atmosphere, completely replace chromium in all corrosion protection systems, improve product reliability/performance, and hence, reduce the cost of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. New materials will be developed, that will be more environmentally acceptable than the existing processes.

The new materials include, new chromate free primers, powder topcoat, high adhesion, low-density polysulphide based sealant, plus non-toxic conversion coatings. In all cases the corrosion protection will be supplied by non-chromate inhibitor systems. The technical objectives are to develop these materials, such that their performance meets or exceeds the existing aerospace materials, in terms of corrosion protection, adhesion, mechanical properties and ease of handling. All the new materials must be mutually compatible, and also be compatible with a range of existing materials, in order to repair old aircraft.

Key products developed and fully evaluated in the MaSSPS project will include:
- a chromium free conversion coating;
- a low VOC (<350gl-'), chromium free primer;
- a water based (<250 gl l), chromium free primer;
- a low temperature (<120ÐC), rapid cure (<20 minute) powder topcoat;
- a chromium free, high adhesion, general purpose polysulphide based sealant, and;
- a low density (p<1.5) high fuel/water resistant, high adhesion polysulphide based sealant. BE97-4291

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
