Objectives and content
Our objectives are the synthesis and development of new
catalyst materials, which would contribute to the
production of cleaner diesel fuel in two ways
by upgrading the polyaromatics components of light
cycle oil to linear and branched paraffins of higher
cetane number by hydrogenation and ring opening reactions
by the production of synthetic diesel components using
low-value light olefin raw materials. The catalysts
developed will incorporate acid sites of controllable
strength (for ring opening and oligomerisation) and
transition metal centres (for hydrogenation).
Two families of materials will be developed:
pillared layered solids, in particular pillared
phosphates, synthetic and natural clays; acid and
transition metal sites may both be within the pillaring
fragment, or the acid site only may be in the pillar and
the transition metal at intrapore sites
mesoporous oxides and phosphates having a uniform,
hexagonal arrangement of pores, prepared by surfactant
templating routes.
These types of material span a pore diameter from ca. 10
- 50 A, i.e. beyond that of conventional vaporous
zeolites. Compounds prepared will be characterised using
a range of structural, thermal, spectroscopic and surface
analytical techniques. They will be screened for the
nature and strength of their acid sites, for their
ability to fully hydrogenate polyaromatics and to
decyclise saturated polyaromatics. They will be tested
on synthetic mixtures and on real feedstocks at the
bench-scale by two of the industrial partners. The
synthesis of the most successful materials will be
scaled-up by the third industrial partner.
No catalysts are commercially available for the targeted
processes, and yet there are clear strategic reasons for
satisfying the increasing demand for diesel whilst, at
the same time, respecting progressively more stringent
regulations concerning the emission of pollutants
(nitrogen and sulfur oxides, particulate...).
The partnership is formed of 3 industrial groups (process
developer, catalyst manufacturer, enduser) and 3
university teams, one of which is a national consortium
of 3 academic groups. It includes 4 EU countries.
The industrial groups have stated their interest in fully
exploiting cost effective materials resulting from the
successful outcome of the programme of research.
