Refrigerated, efficient, ac conductor by cvd of ybco (READY)

Objective

Objectives and content:
This project aims to produce long lengths of textured YBCO high temperature superconducting tape, to construct a prototype power transformer from this tape and to cool the transformer using a purpose built refrigerator. In a four-year programme, starting November 1998, it brings together 10 partners from France, Germany and UK: Oxford Instruments (UK): Coordinator - manufacturer of superconducting magnets, superconducting materials, cryogenic equipment and instrumentation. Air Liquide (France): manufacturer of liquefied gases, cryogenic equipment and low temperature refrigerators. BICC Superconductors (UK): manufacturer of power cable systems, high temperature superconducting materials and associated devices. Institut fur Festk”rperforschung und Werkstofforschung (IFW), Dresden (Germany): research institute devoted to fundamental and applied research and development, with particular emphasis on the fields of solid state and materials research. Institut fur Oberfl„chentechnik und Plasmatechnische Werkstoffentwicklung (IOPW), Technische Universit„t Braunschweig (Germany): research laboratory specialising in the modelling and testing of chemical vapour deposition processes. Joint Industrial Processors for ELECtronics, JIPELEC (France): manufacturer of equipment for physical and chemical vapour deposition and for rapid thermal processing. Laboratoire des Materiaux et du Genie Physique (LMGP), Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (France): research laboratory specializing in thin film research and chemical vapour deposition. Plansee (Germany): manufacturer of specialist metal products, particularly special sheet and tape. Schneider (France): manufacturer of electrical power engineering equipment, particularly for electricity distribution including transformers.

Theva (Germany): manufacturer of thermal evaporation equipment, who will act as a main subcontractor to Oxford Instruments. Key tasks in the programme are:
- development and production of long lengths of biaxially textured metal substrate tape;
- development of fast and continuous processes, using metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) or thermal evaporation (TE), to deposit highly aligned buffer layers and YBCO layers onto the substrate tape;
- production of coated superconducting tape in continuous lengths of 35m, able to carry 150A at 77K in self field;
- using the tape to construct the secondary winding of a 58 kVA single phase iron cored superconducting transformer;
- construction of a closed cycle refrigerator (either micro turbine or pulse tube), with a capacity of 150W at 60K and 40W at 50K;
- construction of a low loss cryostat for the transformer;
- integrating and testing the transformer/refrigerator/cryostat combination as a working prototype in which the operating temperature may be varied to match the instantaneous power loading of the transformer. Although a transformer has been chosen as the demonstration vehicle, the aims of the project are much broader. They are to show that textured YBCO tapes can be produced in quantity at acceptable cost and used in a variety of electric power applications, such as transformers, cables, motors etc and in magnetic applications such as MRI, magnetic separation, research instruments etc. Close integration of the refrigeration and superconducting device will be essential in all these applications and is an important feature of this project. Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
