Objectives and Content:
The need to reduce the adverse impact of road transport systems on the environment and quality of life is widely accepted. Electrical Vehicle Traction is seen as a potentially attractive solution to the problem and lithium-ion batteries the most likely power source in the longer term. In consequence organisations around the world are positioning to participate in this area, especially active are Japan and the USA. In recent years much progress has been achieved in the design of cathode and electrolyte systems in terms of both, cost and performance. Now the carbonanode is the limiting component, especially in terms of cost. Even under mass production scale (20 000 EV battery units per year) the projected price of state-of-the-art carbon active anode will stay unproportionally high. In relation to the other active materials (manganese oxide cathode and liquid electrolyte) of lithium ion system it will account for 67% of the materials cost. There is an urgent need to develop processes for the synthesis of cost efficient carbons if the technology is to survive for the anticipated large market of electric vehicles. This project has the central targets of realising a cost efficient (ECU 10/kgcarbon) preparation process for high performance carbons based on the proven technology of mesophase raw materials synthesis. At the same time, the challenge is not to compromise the state-of-the-art level of electrical performance of the carbonanodes (320 mAh/g, 90% efficiency).
Therefore the project consortium comprise top European experts in the fields of:
- Selection and concentration of appropriate tar and mesophase raw materials conducted by the only European supplier of mesophase material (REPSOL, Spain);
- Carbonisation, graphitisation and processing in order to obtain battery grade carbon powder lead by a known producer of high tech carbons (SCHUNK, Germany);
- Electrode, cell and battery module assembly based on the new carbons performed by a major European battery manufacturer known in the automotive business (VARTA, Germany), and;
- Electric battery testing under vehicle application conditions in order to assure end-user verification of the project results headed by a leading European volume car producer (CRFiat).The expert partnership is already consolidated by close mutual cooperations also linked to other EU projects currently on the way.
