Spectroscopic analysis of liquids through on-line measurement

Objective

Objectives and content
One of the main industrial objective of SALOME is to
eliminate phenolic resins from the fibreboard production
process thus creating a clean end-product which will find
acceptance in the car components market. This will lead
to higher competitiveness and a more environment-friendly
end-product.
In a similar fashion, SALOME will reduce the alkali
charge in both fibreboard and pulp production, leading to
savings in chemicals, lower environmental impact and
higher competitivity. Also, the recovery of chemicals
and energy in the recovery cycles will be improved.
The pulp, paper and fibreboards produced with this new
process will be environmentally friendly superior quality
products based on renewable resources. Due to the high
quality of the end-product, SALOME has the potential to
substitute more plastic materials by natural wood fibre
as well as reduced costs and more uniform paper quality.
It will allow easy non-polluting disposal and recycling
of the product after usage.
Summarising, SALOME will improve the fibreboard and pulp
production by:
reducing resin usage in fibreboard production from 2%
to zero;
increasing fibreboard productivity rate by 9%;
eliminating sodium and dolomite from fibreboard
production;
reducing alkali charge in pulp production by 1%;
reducing Kappa Number standard deviation by 25%;
increasing average Kappa number by 10 points;
increasing Cooking yield by 1%;
increasing Pulp production capacity by 2 %;
decreasing reduction efficiency standard deviation by
30%;
increasing Green liquor reduction efficiency from 85%
to 88%;
reducing the (sulphurous) emissions to the air by 30%.
SALOME will achieve its objectives by:
New affordable multi-sensor on-line measurement systems
for full characterisation of patterns and quantification
of specific components;
New process control systems in the fibreboard, pulp and
recovery cycle lines to act on the information in realtime;
Based on this, creation of a new fibreboard production
process without any phenolic resins through the use of
the natural resin (lignin) content of the wood, and, in
the pulp mill, new processes to optimise product quality
(e.g. kappa number, breaking length, reduction
efficiency) and the process yield;
Due to the elimination of resins, design of new type of
fibreboards for special use in the automotive and food
industry.
SALOME is an end-user driven project. The impetus behind
the development comes from the final end-users of the
system: a fibreboard manufacturer, and the paper and pulp
producers. SALOME addresses improved plant automation
through the development of intelligent sensors, and the
project includes a large automation equipment
manufacturer. Apart from the endusers, suppliers and
manufacturers, the Consortium also includes a specialised
Software Designer and an Institute specialising in
Measuring Equipment. The system will work on data made
available by the partners and will be validated in the
production plants of the three enduser partners.
The three end-users will benefit directly, and the
automation supplier is extremely well positioned in its
market to bring about the exploitation of intelligent
sensors in other industrial processes. SALOME should pay
for its investment in just 2 years.
