Housing for Europe in the next century - affordable, high quality homes for all

Objective

FutureHome is a project for creating high quality housing and is related to the approved inter-regional IMS project, IF7 (Intelligent Field Factory). It will concentrate on developing know-how to create affordable manufactured housing in Europe taking account of the diversity of styles, designs and materials, as well as the preferences of owners and occupiers. The scale of this challenge is beyond any national RTD programme and looks to European support to co-ordinate a large scale response. FutureHome has the potential to provide European industry with the capability for producing 640 000 more homes annually.

FutureHome will develop:
1) adaptable and sustainable building system concepts that can take advantage of advanced manufacturing systems and methods and
2) corresponding off-site and field factory production/assembly processes using intelligent automation, and an IT infrastructure involving cyber-agents.

These leaner design and construction processes will focus on value for money, improved productivity and sustainablility. FutureHome will have benefits through savings in construction cost of 30% and 35% in construction time, together with a reduction in defects on completion of 60%. Other benefits include improving the quality of life, social fabric and health of the European economy.
