Objective
The Thematic Network on the "Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Aero-engine" integrates the various research projects of the European engine industry investigated under the 4th Framework Programme in order to emphasize the targeted character of the research work, to encourage mutual exchange of information between related research areas and to improve the strategic co-ordination of the programmes. By introducing specific clusters on "Turbomachinery Design Tools, "Advanced Materials" and "Low Emission Combustor Technologies" the vast majority of essential engine projects will be covered and thus enable a broadly based cross-flow of information between newly emerging programmes from the latest Call for Proposals and those already active after the current Framework Programme was launched. Research programmes on engine noise will be included in the aircraft noisecluster "XNoise", which will establish informal links to the aero-engine TRA. The relation to the "AERONET"-TRA and the more fundamental climate research will be installed via the cluster on the "Low Emission Combustor Technologies". Strategic cluster and TRA meetings of all parties concerned will serve as the trade board for information inside the engine family and also towards the European Commission and the public where appropriate. The aero-engine TRA will be co-ordinated by MTU, who currently hold the chair of the Engine Industry Management Group (EIMG) with strong support from a steering committee set-up by the other EIMG representatives.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
