Developments of a new technology for water-based coatings used by smes in the foundry industrie

Objective

Core coatings are used in the foundry industry for three basic reasons :
a. To ensure the quality of the mould (and thus of the casting) ;
b. To improve the heat resistance of the cores ;
c. For surface quality (the coating applied to the core acts like a refractory paint and so can reduce the roughness of the casting). The application of these coatings can also help to reduce the amount of finishing work needed to obtain the surface quality required by customers. Currently, most of these coatings are alcohol-based formulations. For environmental reasons (to reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds with the direct consequence of improving working conditions and cutting pollution), these coatings are destined to be replaced increasingly by water-based formulations. The latter are trickier to use and require sustained development efforts (automotive industry foundries are emerging as the first to show an interest). The innovative character of this programme lies in the following points :
a. Investigation of the use of water-based coatings according to their formulations about which little is known for different applications.
b. Currently, there is manual checkinq only ; but no automatic monitorinq of the process. The innovation lies in the use of sensors to check the rheology of the coat as the different parameters are varied.
c. Creation of a complete system (currently there is none) to be incorporated into production lines. The study will enable SMEs foundries to make use of this new technique in their plants.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
