Objective
The increased demand for strong, light and recyclable materials caused the emergence of 'meltspinning'. By meltspinning, aluminium is produced by using cooling rates of more than 1.000.000 °C/s. This method of rapid solidification enables the economic production of new, non conventional aluminium alloys with unique properties. In addition, the meltspinning technique provides an answer to the recycling of contaminated car scrap. The project aims the further development of the meltspinning technique and the implementation of new meltspun aluminium alloys into high grade finished products on an industrial scale. The fulfillment of these objectives requires research into the upscaling and optimization of the actual meltspinning technique, optimizing the extrusion process, thefurther development of new (scrap) alloys and heat treatments for high strength applications. Manufacturers of high grade aluminium finished products have been associated to implement the meltspun aluminium into their production processes so that significant product improvement (e.g. weight reductions, higher strength, improved safety) can be realized.
