Objective
The objective of this proposed project is to develop and demonstrate a process for the production of near net shaped components with very high resistance to wear. The technology to be developed is to use a selfpropagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) route to produce carbide containing metallic particles (termed X-TiC) which can be added to conventional iron and low alloy powders which can then be processed by a powder metallurgy(PM) operation. The development of this process will open up new applications and markets for PM parts, reduce wastage of worn components and raw materials and increase international competitiveness for European countries, particularly those involved in PM processing and machinery and equipment manufacture employing high performance components.
