Development of an Expert System for Spring Material Selection

Objective

The object of the research is to develop an expert system, or knowledge-based computer program for the selection of spring making materials. The program would enable the selection of the optimum spring material and surface engineering combination that will give a reliable service performance, taking into account such factors as corrosion, fatigue, relaxation, strength, formability, electrical properties etc... as well as cost and availability. The research would initially concentrate upon the identification, and filling of gaps in the knowledge of spring rnaterials, by collation of information from at least 50 European companies, being mainly SME spring rnanufacturers, but also industry raw material suppliers, and spring end users. All the factors that would need to be taken into account in the expert system would be identified during the first six months of the project. Spring manufacturers from all EU states will be offered the opportunity to participate in this research project. A first draft of the computer program will be issued at the end of the first year, and in the second year of the research the accumulated experience of using the system will be incorporated. Research will be undertaken to clarify anomalies that are certain to arise.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
