Objective
The objective is to develop tools with good economical tool life for the high speed machining of steels. New multi layer coatings for cemented carbide cutting tools made by a PVD process will be developed. These coatings will have a very low friction and thus provide a long tool life at a high cutting speed. Also dry machining will be possible. The coatings can be applied on existing tools like inserts, emdmills and drills in many machining processes: turning, milling, boring, drilling. The industrial problem with high speed machining of steel is the non availability of a good cutting tool material. High speed machining of steel with the new cutting tools can reduce production costs with 30% and increase productivity with 40%. The European market for high speed machining of steel is estimated at 2400 MECU in production cost. The reduction of production costs is estimated at 800 MECU yearly. The principal industrial targets of this project include the production of cutting tools for high speed machining of steel with cutting speed higher then 800 m/min with a good economical tool life, to enable high speed machining of steel without the use of cooling fluid and the realisation of a multi layer coating at appro. the same cost as a normal modern tool coating
