ThE INNOVATIVE FLEXIBLE AND COST-EFFECTIVE COMBI-FURNACE FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE FERROUS FOUNDRIES

Objective

The modern Ferrous Foundry using Capola ovens are facing the challenge: - to produce a high quality cast iron - to make production more flexible - to minimize melting costs by taking appropriate environmental and energy measures. The proposed development of the Combi-Furnace will deal with the above. The objectives of the proposed project are: A. to develop a new melting technology for ferrous foundries (pilot scale prototype furnace with a capacity of 4 tons molten iron per hour) B. to develop scaling rules for full scale operation C. to establish a close cooperation between melting furnace manufacturers, foundries and research institutes. The proposed combi-furnace will make use of the benefits of both the cupola furnace and the electric induction furnace. The innovative character of the Combi-Furnace lies in the electrically heated coke-bed which is used for super heating the molten iron. Moreover the project will bring together existing technologies (gas-fired cupola / induction furnace) in an innovative way. The proposers clearly see the need for additional research to make possible the design of the proposed innovative furnace. Especially the heating of the coke bed in the lower part of the furnace requires attention. A prototype furnace will be built on which a research programme will be carried out. Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
