Objective Lightweight Structures comprising pre-stressed cable nets and textile fabricsprovide efficient load carrying systems and scope for dramatic architecturalexpression. The most complex and critical factor in their design is their shapedefinition, derived from a 3-stage procedure: (i) form-finding, i.e. finding ashape consistent with pre-stress and boundaries (ii) patterning, i.e.production of a 2-dimensional cutting pattern (iii) static and dynamicanalyses. The aim of the project is to develop the most efficient computationalmethod encompassing all three stages of design. The outcome of the projectwill be a proposal for development of a computational design method for tensionstructures that minimises cost of analysis, produces optimal shapes ofmembranes and increases competitiveness of such products.
