Objective
With the clear agenda set for the phase-out of Methyl Bromide by the 7th Gonference of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol in Vienna in December 1995 the food processing industry has now been confronted with the urgent need to find replacement insect pest control methods to comply with the increasingly stringent health and safety regulations for their production sites as well as for pest controllers in general. The research partners, Thermo Lignum GmbH of Germany, FTD-Entwicklungs- und Service Ges. m.b.H. of Austria, Igrox Limited and Thermo Lignum UK Limited of the United Kingdom understand that there is currently no viable and cost-effective method for the treatment of food processing facilities like flour mills and bakeries, nor for any food processing machinery, bins, silos and other facilities for the treatment of commodities in storage, like cocoa beans and coffee. Their objective therefore is to investigate the feasibility of utilising currently exist static chamber-based technology incorporating novel heat and humidity control to kill insect pests in furniture, artefacts and organic material in general to the field of public health and food storage and production as a possible alternative to the use of the ozone-depletant Methyl Bromide in this sector.
