Open-loop solutions for package glass recycling

Objective

European countries with no wine production import considerably more package glass than they can recycle in current closed- or open-loop solutions. In case of Stenberg-Yhtiot Oy, a glass collecting and sorting plant, it is essential to find new open-loop markets for recycled glass. Present markets can be greatly broadened by utilizing the recycled glass as a valuable raw material in the production of building elements, tiles, concrete blocks and castables. The objectives of the project are: (1 ) to find the requirements for the recycled glass treatment, especially for the particle size distribution, (2) find the additives to prepare a workable mixture, (3) optimise the production technology for tiles, concrete elements and castables, (4) harmonize the technical specifications of the products and (5) develope end-products with high added-value. The advantages of the project are: (1 ) substantial increase in recycled glass utilization, (2) lowering of rawmaterial costs, (3) broadening the usability of castables-technology and (4) showing a true realisation of the principles of sustainable development (with up to 99% usage of recycled materials in the product). The consortium is comprehensive including both the raw material supplier (Stenberg-Yhtiot Oy who takes care of recycled glass collecting and its treatment) and the building element producers: tiies (Woolliscroft), concrete elements (Partner 4) and castables (ABR Innova Oy). Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
