Development of fine bore wear resistant tubular components for abrasive water jet cutting nozzles and wire guide tubes

Objective

Nozzles for abrasive water jet cutting and wire guide tubes for bobbin winding utilise fine tubes whose bore must be highly wear resistant. These components must also be strong and tough and preferably machinable on the outer surface. There is a need to improve the abrasion resistance of the components. Furthermore the ability to produce finer nozzles would open up large, high value market areas involving precision cutting and machining. The proposed work utilises a combination of advanced coating and joining technologies to produce composite tubing consisting of an ultrahard bore encased in a strong and tough outer tube of a metal or cermet material. This innovative approach will enable the bore design to be tailored and achieve maximum surface smoothness required for optimum performance.
