Objective
The scope of this research program is to develop a cost effective manufacturing process for Titanium-Nickel shape memory tubes, rings and capillary tubes to be used in medical and engineering applications. The main subjects of research will be: - The determination of deformation properties related to the production processes needed for extrusion of raw material and tube drawing operations. This will include a literature study, practical research tests and metallurgical analysis. - The design and prototyping of medical applications using the tubes. Tube drawing experiments will be performed using conventional drawing methods, a novel drawing method and a combination thereof. A total of 6 partners (2 RTD,- and 5 SME end-user partners) are involved in this project covering the entire manufacturing chain as describe above. Partners will carry out specific activities in their line of experience and core business. The project will concentrate on applications Ti-Ni tubes in the medical field, a market that was identified as one with good growth potential, especially in Europe. For application in medical tools and systems, the Ti-Ni alloys will primarily be used in their pseudo-elastic state involving innovative approaches and concepts to diagnostics and treatments. Examples are: applications involving lasers, medical imaging, radiotherapy, minimal invasive surgery and controlled drug release. After successful completion of the project, the tubes will be introduced in industry to be used in e.g. nuclear installations, the automotive industry and the hydrocarbon industry.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
