Improving communications and processes for cost-effective short run print-on-demand

Objective

The project aims to identify and resolve the issues both technical and logistical currently inhibiting the development of short run on demand digital printing in the Printing and Publishing Industries. The project intends to develop an integrated production system using open systems and in particular exploiting both EDI and MIS techniques. In so doing it will streamline the supply chain between printers and publishers, enabling them to economically fulfil demand for short run books. Ultimately the whole book supply chain through ordering, manufacture and distribution will benefit from these developments, which wiil also open up previously underdeveloped book markets and fulfil previously unsatisfied demand. The system will also have an environmental impact by cutting paper waste in the Publishing Industry.
