Optical fiber display

Objective

Optical Fibre Displays consist of a number of fibres that conduct light from a remote light source. This method is very attractive, since it has excellent light intensity (amount of lumen),has a relatively low energy consumption and hardly requires maintenance. The technology is suitable to applications in the automotive industry(headlights; dashboard lights),traffic signs and advertising displays. However, currently Optical Fibre Displays are only manufactured manually,no automated manufacturing has been developed. This brings along high production costs and man-dependent(inconsistent) products. This project is initiated to develop a machine to produce optical fibre displays reproduceably(i.e.at consistent quality)and against substantially lower costs.Hence,large-scale production becomes achievable. Also, research to a suitable resin and to syuthetic fibres is necessary to ensure automatic production. The machine to be developed is the most significant part of the project. This machine consists of an injection head cleaning system, fibre identification and separation unit(essential to the applications where more than one colour is required, i.e. advertising displays),cutting unit, extruder die, spooling unit, bobbin carrier and a process control unit. The project is proposed by a consortium,in which several manufacturers of specific machine elements have been united. The project foresees in design, development and testing of a proto-type machine,as well as in testing several resins and types of fibres.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
