Objective
The main objectives of this proposal are to investigate alternative methods of tanning with materials other than chrome and ways to reduce to a minimum the required quantity of chrome for tanning and at the same time improving to the maximum its uptake and exhaustion in the float. Such methods may be: - organic pretanning followed by vegetable tanning, - vegetable tanning followed by Aluminium fixation, and - chrome pretanning followed by silica sol. retanning for white leathers. Any other process concerning non-chrome tanning may also be investigated. It will be a co-operative type of research project and the role of the SME proposers will be to carry out trials in a semi-industrial scale of the research findings, quality evaluation of the leathers produced and the effectiveness and practicality of the manufacturing processes involved. This research work will be applied to the most interesting articles on hides and skins, according to the choice of the partners. Experienced tanners in the field will be involved as well as experienced RTD performers adequately equipped to carry on the research work.
