The utilisation of water industry waste in ceramic products

Objective



Throughout EC Member States the population's drinking water is drawn from rivers, lakes and/or boreholes. Before distribution this water invariably requires pre-treatmert at appropriate purification plants (waterworks) for it to be brought up to the exacting quality standards required by the appropriate regulatory authorities. As a result of such treatment, the solid matter separated out from the the water accumulates as a 'sludge' and demands regular removal and disposal. In common with many other utility by-product wastes, the problem of finding a satisfactory long-term disposal solution for this sludge is of growing concern, exacerbated by the relevant disposal legislation which is becoming increasingly more stringent. The United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland anc Greece are three Member States in which this particular disposal problem is becoming acute. Currently, the only solution available is for its burial in landfill sites. However, rising costs and he generally reducing availability of suitable places conveniently close to sources of major sludge production, has led to an active interest in seeking alternative disposal solutions. Preliminary research within the Ceramic Technology Section of Staffordshire University has identified that with proper pre-treatment and mix-design modification, such sludge may potentially fulfill a useful role in ceramic products. In particular, specialist ware such as refractory items and vitrified pipes. The objective of this CRAFT proposal is to promote participation between a wide range of ceramic manufacturers (SME's) in Member States and appropriate educational/research organisations with the aim to establish the regular inclusion of this sludge into such products, consequently demonstrating its commercial viability as a practical alternative to lardfilling. It is believed that the outcome results of this proposal will offer widesca1e replication opportunities in many other Memeter States within the Community.
