Development of a specific cable with new mechanical and corrosion protection characteristics to improve maintenance and safety of suspension bridges

Objective

The main objective of the research is to improve the maintenance and the safetyof suspension bridges and other similar suspensed structures by creating aspecific cable made of individually protected strand (such as the strands whichare used today on cables tayed bridges such as the "Normandie" bridge) but witha tight bond between the polyethylene cover and the strand. This will permitthe transfer of tangential force at each collar connecting the hangers to thesuspension cable. In fact, this problem came into light during the last 10years: extensive rehabilitation programs have started in several countries. Theexisting problems covers all suspensed bridges in the World and no solutions orstructural repair is possible rather than complicate and expensive maintenance;these works request the dismantling of the old corroded huge cables. In most ofthe case, the old technology does not permit to maintain the traffic on thebridge. This is a big concern for the Owners and the Users. The proposed systemwill be much more flexible and could be easily installed and maintained lateron without traffic interruption. The aim of the research project is to develop prototypes of new protected cables and specific steel collar and test them toachieve the definition of these new products. At the same time will bedeveloped the tools and equipments for future industrialisation and tests onsites.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
