High speed thermoplastic filament winding of pressure vessels

Objective

The industrial objective of the proposed RTD will be to develop the filament winding process to make it compatible with the requirements of processing using thermoplastic polymer, to enable the application of this technology to a range of pressure vessel markets. The technology would be developed so it could be applied to existing filament winding equipment therefore realising the technology at a relatively low cost to the SME partners. Specific objectives of the proposed RTD will be to provide a weight reduction of 50% combined with a cost reduction of 20% when compared to existing steel pressure vessels. The work programme will aim to deliver a finnished product at a competitive cost to existing products manufactured from more traditional materials. It will aim to reduce the number of individual process steps involved in generating the part whilst maintaining production rates. This will enable the thermoplastic composite parts to be developed for use in areas not currently using these materials and will give secondary benefits to end users in terms of lighter weight component. In the main exploitation area, transport, this will lead to a reduction in through life energy cost The needs of the end users will be supported by tooling suppliers, equipment manufacturers and materials suppliers within the projecd partnership, to ensure that the development runs smoothly and can be readily exploited. This development will allow the core group of SMEs to significantly increase their markets in the supply of pressure vessels, equipment and materials, depending on their position in the supply chain.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
