Design optimisation of aluminium structures in shipbuilding

Objective

The economic development and integration of Europe is being accompanied by an ever-increasing demand for mobility of people and goods. Meeting this demand asks for new approaches in all sectors of transportation. For the shipping trade, one of the implications is that there currently is a need for fuel-effective vessels that are capable of taking a relatively high payload directly to its inland end destination. Lightweight materials will play a key role in realising such vessels. Theme of the proposed project is the conceptual development of a lightweight, shallow-draught inland-water cargo ship. To successfully exploit the assets of such lightweight materials as aluminium, new methods of shipbuilding should be developed rather than adapting the current ones for steel. This requires several designing and manufacturing issues to be addressed. The significant increase in the use of aluminium for simple standardised ships, following this new approach, is to result in a draught reduction of 40% as compared to conventional ships. In effect, these vessels should be able to sail waterways of 1.0 m minimal depth or less; this correspondingly improves their employability and functionality for inland-water operation.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
