Improvement in quality control of rubber-covered rollers

Objective

The aims of the proposed research are to satisfy the need for economical measurement of the surface finish of rubber-covered rollers, evaluation of bond integrity and study of roller friction to improve understanding of the effects of surface treatments and rubber compound upon overall roller performance. At present instruments for surface finish are expensive, bond evaluation is uncertain and there is a lack of information on friction. The main tasks are: (i) development of new test methodology for surface finish; (ii) evaluation of new bond integrity tests; (iii) study of roller friction to improve understanding and product performance. A successful outcome should improve test protocols, produce new prototype instrumentation, assist adoption of water-based bonding agents so leading to a healthier factory environment, and help reassess rubber scrap disposal. Direct benefits to roller manufacturers would be fewer rejects, fewer delays and the ability to offer better guarantees of performance. Cost savings of 20% may be possible in a European sales market of 500MECU per annum, with further benefits accruing to related sectors concerned with recycling and the environment.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
