The production of activated carbon from scrap types

Objective

The scientific and technical objectives of this proposal concern the production of a widely used industrial product, namely the conversion of scrap rubber tyres to activated carbon, by an economically and environmentally viable pyrolysis process. Research is required to establish the conditions necessary to achieve the transformation and to characterise the properties of the activated carbon so obtained. Problems of feed preparation, of minimising pyrolysis and activation reactor residence times whilst retaining temperature uniformity, of achieving acceptable product quality on a repeatable basis, and of establishing the nature of secondary product streams are all addressed. To the SMEs involved it represents new market opportunities related to the processing of a waste life-expired product into a valued and marketable material.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
