Advanced wood surface coating treatment for exterior used wood by full-scale multilayer flow coating technique

Objective

The ecological legislation within the harmonisation process among the member states of the European Union are forcing the majority of SME's in the wood chain to improve their coating treatment techniques in terms of reducing the amounts of hazardous wastes produced during the coating application process. Also, improving the efficiency during the painting process, the overall performance, the quality and the durability of end-coated wooden joinery is vital for many manufacturing companies in Europe in order to maintain their business. Besides other methods, paint application by flow coat technique was seldomly used in the last decades, but this technology has increased in magnitude significantly during the past few years due to far-reaching ecological changes in the paint application process and quality as well as durability problems especially for wooden windows painted with water-borne systems by convential application methods. Hence, the main goal of the proposal will be to develop a full-scale multi layer flow coating process for industrial finished wooden elements, e.g. windows, doors, claddings and fences, comprising primer, pre- and top-coat replacing the conventional spray application technique for the top-coat. The economic, industrial and environmental impacts of the proposal are: reduction of the outlets of organic solvents, reduction of waste production and waste treatment by deminishing the sludge disposal costs of 50% overspray loss produced with the spray application technique.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
