Development of prototype production line for vacuum insulation panels

Objective

The main objective of the project is researching and developing a small scaleflexible test production facility for prototype vacuum super insulation panels. The thermal insulation value of these panels is at least ten times higher ascompared to current insulation products like polyurethane/polystyrene foam and glass/rockwool. A vacuum insulation panel consists of a porous filler material, which is evacuated and vacuum tight packed in a metal envelope. Heat-treatedand horizontally oriented stacked glass fiberfleeces are appropriate as filler, having a thermal conductivity of 2 mWm-lK-l when evacuated to at least 1 Pa.Insulation foams having an open structure can be used as filler. For foams, theapplication temperature is limited and the thermal conductivity is 6 mWm-lK-l. Packaging filler material of arbitrary size is the main process to beresearched in this project. A promising envelope material is stainless steel.Laser welding will be used as joining method for making vacuum tightconnections between envelope parts. Making the panel parts very accurately tosize, positioning envelope parts, prestressing the filler material and fastwelding without defects are the main processes for the prototype facility. Anefficient evacuating and closing method and an quality check will be developed. The industrial objective is to proof the feasibility of scaling up the existinglab-scale construction method for panels to a flexible partly automatedproduction process. The main applications are roof and outside insulation forbuildings, furnaces, refrigerators, cold stores, transport vehicles, containers(road and air transport) and storage systems.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
