New process development to recycle CD mastering wastes or unsold CD made of polycarbonate/metal/INK complex into reinjectable polycarbonate

Objective

The project consists in dealing with the global problem of unsold compact-disc and with line rejects. These products are made of a polycarbonate substrate coated with metal and decorate with inks. the aim of the project is to recycle such products into polycarbonate that could reinjected into CD mastering production lines. The practices related to a CD recuperation and to material recycling are well known: The main part of unsold CD stocks is destroyed even before the unpacking of the CD. The wastes cannot be used and are consequently thrown into dump. Metallic and printed CD manufacturing wastes are taken back in some cases by the supplier of polymers with a view to regenerate and reuse it for various applications. However as a CD is covered with metal coating and printed with ink, it is currently impossible to recycle it as new polycarbonate in order to reuse it. The main deliverable of the R&D project will be a new process combining mechanical and chemical treatment that will allow CD recycling.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
