Objective
The objective of this proposal is the study and development of low ecological impact antifouling coatings in marine protection. The draft of the recent European Directive "Biocidal Products Directive" - COM (93) 351 Final Syn 465, aims to introduce an unified set of regulations for biocidal products in the European Union that will cover all marine antifouling coatings. Recently, the European Commission has published the criteria to evaluate the products in an annex to the directive (COM (95) 387 Final - COD 465) and they are based on ecological criteria. However, the shipping industry and coating manufacturers are still concerned that these directives could result in a widespread ban on using high performance antifouling coatings. Since at present are not TBT-free alternative products with as good properties as the ones containing TBT, and the shipping industry is demanding them, this project intends to improve the performance of the present TBT-free self-polishing antifouling coatings and to study and/or develop other alternatives.
