Objective
The technical objectives of the Project are to evaluate the claims that the plasma immersion ion implantation process provides for a depth of hardening of metals at least 100 fold greater than that of conventional ion implantation; . the technology is non-line-of-sight, thus eliminating one of the major problems of conventional ion implantation. In turn, the RTD goals of the Project are to evaluate the comparative performance of conventional and PI treatments for a series of materials with existing industrial implantation markets. These materials will include: . Tool Steels - forming and processing tools for longer life; . Stainless Steel - for combined wear and corrosion resistance; . Titanium Materials - for improved prosthetic performance.
