Manufacture of holgraphic fabrics

Objective

Holographic images are used in decorative applications to make attractive packaging and also on security items such as credit cards to prevent counterfeiting. The technique produces 3-D effects of great clarity and visual impact particularly as the image is moved. So far, these images have only been applied to rigid or semi-rigid substrates such as polyester sheet, cardboard or stiff paper. The proposers have identified a vast potential market if the technique could be applied to drapable fabrics such as those used in the fashion industry. This project sets out to achieve a woven textile fabric substrate with a very flat and even surface. The Department of Textiles at UMIST, and a leading textile converter will be carrying out this work and they will be using innovating combinations of yarns and weaving techniques. New techniques will be developed for transfer and adhesion of holographic images to the surface of this material and the seconding partner an SME fashion manufacturer will be making up trial garments to test for wearability. The new material will achieve an even greater impact for holographic images as a clothing material than it already has because of the natural movement of garments as they are worn.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
