Objective
The objective of the proposed research is to develop a high tech system for automation of the production process within the wood industry, specifically the production of MDF wooden sheets. By developing new methods to detect all kinds of defects, using artificial intelligence, the system will automatically check the surface and the finish of the sheets for all defects and impurities. The system will consist of a new advanced image analysis system comprising a number of PC's including video cameras for monitoring of surfaces and measurement of the sheet thickness. The PC's analyse the images by means of advanced pattern recognition and interpretation techniques, and hereafter communicate the results to the devices on the production line that control the smoothing and grading of the sheets. The project represents a new dimension in industrial automation based on computer vision technology, from simple recognition and approval or rejection of an object on a production line, to automatic preparation and finishing of the object. It is the partners' intention to commercialise the project results by selling and marketing the vision automation systems to industrial end-users.
