Development of archival quality leather

Objective

The chief objective of this project is to develop a tannery process for the production of consistent quality book binding leathers that not only meet the requirements of existing relevant National Standards for resistance to acidic atmospheric pollution but have the properties required by the binder For the attainment of this goal the following RTD tasks will be undertaken within the framework of this project: Current commercial book binding leathers will be evaluated, in order to establish how these leathers fail to meet the requirements of the binder Quality control testing procedures will be developed to define end-user requirements in an objective manner, understood be both the Tanner and the binder, applicable to binding leathers in general systematic investigation of Tannery processes for the production of currently commercial semi-alum archival quality leather will be undertaken. aiming their optimisation for the production of leathers of consistent archival quality Transfer of the innovative processes to Industrial scale production working with Tanneries, specifically selected for this purpose. Alternative organic tanning processes will be investigated at pilot plant scale and evaluated for the production of metal-free archival quality leather. aiming the minimisation of the environmental impact of leather processing in long term It will be a co-operative type of RTD project whereas the role of the SME proposers will be to carry out pilot and semi-industrial scale trials. undertake the development of a quality control/testing workscheme for the definition of end-user requirements and the evaluation of the leathers produced the optimisation. development and evaluation of the innovative tannery processes and materials products of this project, as applicable End-users. i. e. book-binders. National Libraries, Publishing Firms, and Schools of Book Binders, as well as RTD experts will be participating actively in the project as partners or contracted external services

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
