Realising the potential for timber frame : Process improvement through lightweight cladding

Objective

The benefits of residential, lightweight framing systems are recognised by many housing clients to be: reduced foundation requirements, step improvements in productivity, factory quality standards and reduced embodied energy requirements/ CO2 However, realising the potential of these systems is inhibited by a preference for heavy cladding systems within a number of EC member states. Brick or blockwork with a rendered finish prevent step performance increases occurring on three fronts: Weight- excessive foundation requirements, wet - slow and labour intensive process and quality link - cladding quality is entirely labour dependent. Driven by cost and productivity improvements, lightweight housing and other residential systems are set to dramatically increase market share over the next ten years. Both timber and steel frame systems offer enormous benefits. The objective of this study is to identify potential lightweight claddings suitable for use with timber-frame housing and promote these via real demonstration projects. Research is required into the adaptation of existing lightweight cladding systems within other construction sectors, and the application of these new lightweight cladding technologies specifically aimed at the residential sector.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
