Improved efficiency production of cast ceramic products

Objective

Slip casting is a simple process which is widely used for the production of a number of different ceramic products, usually with thin walls or of complex shapes. The process has seen little change in recent years and is slow and labour intensive. Because of this labour component, European competitiveness has suffered from competition from countries with lower labour costs. It is believed that the utilisation of microwave heating combined with improvements to the ceramic slips will overcome current production problems. The objective of the project is to develop a technique with improved flexibility, efficiency, productivity and product quality by using microwave energy in up to four stages of the slip casting process.
