Environmestal adapted pretreatment of aluminium before powder coating for outdoor use

Objective

The objective of the project is to find, adapt and develop a more environmental friendly alternative to chromating of aluminium. The process must fulfil the demands on a pretreatment process used before powder painting of items aimed for outdoor use. The main topic is components for the building industry. Since long chromating is used for that. The process has many advantages. It produces high quality coatings and can be used on almost all types of aluminium materials. The process is stable and has a relatively broad process window. The main disadvantage is that it contains hexavalent chromium, which is both allergenic and cancerogenic. During the last years there have been intensive efforts to develop alternatives to hexavalent chromating. In the literature there are some processes described and results from lab-scale testings. As far as we know there is no process in use together with powder painting of aluminium products with the demand for outdoor performance. Instead of using one process for all types of aluminium materials there will be a number of processes. For a small company with limited resources it will be difficult by our own to find the optimal process.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
