Technical ceramics machining using traditional machines to remove chips with the help of the laser technology

Objective

The present study aims at studying a new machining process of technical ceramics by using a traditional CNC machining lathe. A Nd-YAG or diode laser will be integrated to this lathe for the preheating of the material (A1203, ZrO2, A17r, Mullite) to bring it to a state of plasticity. The ceramics machining by chips removal should give machining results of about 20 to 30% higher with an increase of the mechanical properties of the finished part. Emphasis will be put on the process control to guarantee the obtention of the final machining dimension while taking into account the thermal expansion of the material due to the laser heating. A prototype of the machining machine including a laser beam handling system of 5 free degrees and guaranting a good tests reproducibility will be made by IREPA LASER At the same time a process control system will be finalized by FHG-IPT to adjust to the depth of pass of the tool according to the material expansion.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
