Smart multiparameter submicrosensors

Objectif

Expansion of continuous scale processing technology using by many industrial sectors in the EU, more stringent legislation for Environmental Monitoring and mandatory monitoring of effluents have created the need for a range of sensitive, accurate and user friendly sensors with an acceptable lifespan. A specific economic requirement is that such sensors should be more accurate and cost effective for existing process instrumentation users and allow a whole new range for users to take advantage of new sensing technology. The specific benefits are: 1.The actual increased lifespan on more cost effective production of such sensors will reduce cost and enable companies to implement automatic process monitoring for better environmental control which will be benefit for the community in general. 2.The reduced maintenance, the attended reduction in down time due to auto calibration and deaning will provide more throughput for the same energy consumed. 3.Accurate auto-process monitoring provided by these sensors will result in higher yields and lower energy consumption. 4.As more on-line measurement will be enabled there will be less requirement for expansive manual sampling and testing with subsequent reduction in operator hazards and possible errors. Direct continuous measurement methods on-line are more representative of the actual discrete process than sampling thus giving: - accurate predictive process models - allowing better forecasting of 'out of guard band" conditions - providing more rapid response to problems and faults - resulting in reduced need for expensive instrumentation. SPECIFIC QUANTIFIABLE ECONOMIC BENEFITS The CE market for smart sensors is about 65 Millions Eros at current technologies and price levels. This market is growing at 15 % per annum and it is anticipated with a life cost reduction of some 30 %, attendant process improvement benefits and availability of a wider range of continuous measurement sensors, this market will expand by some 75 % over the next 3 years. The first microsensors are appearing on the market and the principal goal of this project is to build the first optical multiparameters submicrosensors. SMART MULTIPARAMETER SUBMICROSENSORS There are few sensors for the water quality monitoring and as new problems appear they will need simple and reliable techniques. Concentration of differents components as nitrate or COD will be easily determined by ultraviolet multiwavelength absorptiometry (WMA). The knowledge of the whole absoption, reflectance or fluoresence spectrum controled by a submicro-computer introduced directly in monochromator allow a direct computation of the concentration for solution and a rapid determination of specific color for ink, paper, paint or food. The technologies used today in every sectors of industry: manufacturing, materials processings, food production, transport, defense system, chemistry, depend on the ability to sense and measure basic physical and chemical parameters. The smart or intelligent multiparameter submicrosensors offered a built-in programable facility which enable operating parameters to bechanged on line if necessary as required for most effective device performance. It is inherently a digital device, although the analogue nature of worst sensors necessitates the measurement to digital conversion circuitry between the sensor and the processor. The main proposal goal is the realisation of smart optical multiparameter submicrosensor abble to: -convert color in specific information for pigments blending and for graphic link. -determinate the concentration of components in waters and wastewaters. -estimate the variation of color in ensyme fixed on plastic support. One main application for examination of natual waters and wastewaters is the on line determination of specific components as nitate, chronium and phenol, chose to demonstrate the scientific validity of this new multiparameter absorbance sensor. Another application is the estimation, without reactant, from raw sample, of organic oxidizable matter expressed as chemical oxygen demand or Biochemical Oxygen Demand or Total Organic Carbon. The smart multiparameter submicrosensor will transform classic monochromator in colorimeter or polyspectrofluorimeter allow, by example, the quickly determination of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocabon (PAH). The main benefits for european partners are the possibilities to build and sell new high tech system which will renovate the advance technology industry and the important part of smart submicrosensor world market will be win.
