Increased leather performance through the application of specific enzymes in early stages of processing

Objective

To survive and compete within the growing world market, the European leather industry is constantly faced with the need to maintain and improve product quality through the implementation of clean technologies. This project will aim to assess the potential benefits of using enzymes in the early stages of leather processing. Innovations addressed include the use of cellulase enzymes to remove dung from cattle hides, the removal of grease with lipolytic enzymes and targeted hair removal. The project is a balance of laboratory scale and tannery scale trials which will aim to screen potentially useful products prior to larger scale evaluation with regard to leather quality and effluent loading. This research will help the European leather industry gain a competetive edge within the world market by refining the processing of leather through the introduction of cleaner enzyme systems resulting in enhanced product quality and performance.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
