Objective
- Prototype of the new high efficiency spray system: integrated fixed-bar spray nozzles and booth, with reduced chemicals consumption, air emissions, noise, dimensions, energy consumption,
- on-line thermal quality detection and failure control equipment of the sprayed leather,
- trials results about the efficiency of existing spraying technology (rotating spray booth),
- demonstration results of finishing tests on the new fixed bar spray system,
- production management software,
- analyses of the emissions to atmosphere and survey of the most suitable abatement technologies.
The emissions of SOV and particulate which originate in leather finishing are due to the application technology, i.e. the rotary spray system, whose poor efficiency is caused by the rotary movement of the aerographs. Eliminating this movement would definitely solve the problem of these emissions; this has not so far been possible as there are no suitable aerographs; the present ones mounted on fixed bar would simply produce a series of lines in two different colours, making the hides economically quite worthless. The submitted project is intended to develop a new finishing system based on new aerographs which won't need a circular movement because of the possibility of regulating the form, quantity and distribution of the spray in order to obtain uniform distribution with a single coat. The stability of the position of the spray guns will make it possible to develop a new emission suction system and a new and more effective process control system. This last will consist of an optical control system to assess the spraying parameters and of an advanced software to interpret the signals from the optical system and then to generate the signals to be sent to the automatic spray gun follow up link system to make the necessary corrections to the spraying parameters in real time The following benefits should be reached by the proposers, but also by the European leather industry as a whole: substantial reduction of the dispersion of chemical products, a decrease in the consumption of chemicals of 30-40%, a great reduction in the consumption of energy, a substantial improvement in the working environment, greater uniformity of the the finished leathers, a reduction in the costs of destroying VOS and particulate, an improvement in the relations with the local communities and local authorities of the different Eu countries, an increase in technological co-operation between all the leather-related industries and between these and the research centres The methodology of the proposed project is characterised by a scientific and technical approach which privileges the constant alternation between development of the innovations and their testing on the field under conditions very close to the operating ones, thus making it possible to obtain reliable significative information. After a series of tests technicians will be able to design and build the pilot finishing plant, followed by a session of experimental tests. Then the optical control system will be developed, together with the software programme; experimental tests on the various types of hides will then be made by the tanneries with the aim of collecting the data for economic, technical and environmental evaluations. Finally the dissemination of the results carried out at a European level in order to spread the results obtained in the project.
