Objective
The objectives of the project are firstly to develop a new, lower cost and environmentally attractive manufacturing technique for the production of ferrous and non-ferrous investment castings and secondly to exploit attributes of the new technique in order to increase the size of components which can be made by this process. If successful, the scope of application of investment castings could be increased significantly to embrace markets where traditionally their cost and/or size limitation have precluded their use. The project requires the development of materials and process parameters, their validation and then "hands-on" foundry demonstration of the new manufacturing technique. A successful outcome will be the production of shells, using water-based as opposed to alcohol-based ceramic slurries, approaching one half of the thickness of those currently used. In addition, it is expected that these thin shells can be filled with molten metal without the need to preheat them to the high temperatures necessary in conventional investment casting practice. An important feature of the new technique is the support provided to the thin shells by free flowing, compacted sand to which vacuum is applied as the moulds are poured.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
